About Rolf Wolff

Rolf Wolff (born January 12, 1953 in Wuppertal) is a German-Swedish scholar (professor of management studies) and senior university manager. At present, he conducts research at Gothenburg Research Institute (GRI) which he founded in 1990.

After graduating from Fachoberschule für Wirtschaft and an apprenticeship at the Savings Bank in Wuppertal, Rolf Wolff begun study economics at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal in 1972. He graduated in 1977 and joined the doctoral programme at the School of Business and Economics, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. As a part fulfillment of the doctoral programme, he received a Master of Social Sciences degree. In 1980  Wolff was employed as an Assistant Professor at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. He therefore completed his doctoral thesis on organizational learning when working there, and in 1981 received a Doctoral degree from the University of Wuppertal.

In 1980, Rolf Wolff married Hélène Möllerström, his life companion since 1972. After having moved back to his wife’s country, Sweden, in 1982, he worked at Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), where he obtained the title of Associate Professor (“docent”) in 1984. He left in 1985 to become founding dean of Nordische Universität Flensburg, one of the then few private university initiatives in Germany. The project was successful, but after a change in regional government, Nordische Universität was integrated into the University of Flensburg.

After a short period of time as CEO of a management consulting company in Stockholm, Rolf Wolff became an Adjunct Professor at School of Business and Economics, University of Gothenburg, in 1989. In 1990, he founded Gothenburg Research Institute, which he managed and helped to finance until 1997.

In the years 1997-1999 Rolf Wolff was Professor of Environmental Management at Copenhagen Business School, where he headed the Centre for Environmental Management.

In 1999 Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg offered Wolff a Chair in Environmental Management. He accepted the position, but already in 2000 he was asked to became the Dean of School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. The objectives for his tenure were to intensify the Schools’ international contacts, business outreach, and to stabilize its financial strcuture. These objectives were well accomplished, as demonstrated by two 5-years EQUIS accreditations. Wolff resigned from his post in 2010, after 10 years leading the school, to become in 2011 the CEO of the Chalmers University Foundation.

In 2012, Rolf Wolff accepted the position of a President of Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), but he resigned already in 2013, as a result of internal conflicts, related to SSE:s operations in Russia. In the same year Wolff became President and CEO of EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht in Wiesbaden and Oestrich-Winkel. The School had previously suffered from a scandal and was close to bankruptcy. With the support of a newly formed Board, headed by Robert Köhler, Wolff managed the turnaround. By 2015, EBS’ operations showed a surplus; measures to restore the negative equity were in place. The School's reputation was re-established, with its Masters programme achieving number 14 in the Financial Times ranking. When the Chairman of the Board passed away, the new Board and Wolff disagreed over strategy matters, and Wolff left in 2015.

He returned to Gothenburg, where his wife, one of Sweden’s leading dermatologists, owns and runs her dermatology clinic. He now commences research projects at GRI, Gothenburg Research Institute.

It needs to be added that Rolf Wolff has served on various boards, in industry and in academia (among others on the board of SCANCORE at Stanford, 2000-2008, and EFMD, European Foundation for Management Development, EQUIS-Awarding Body; board member of the Swedish Faire, Volvo Financial Services). He has participated in/or chaired over 30 business school evaluations and accreditations all over the world. He also has been engaged as consultant to top managers, in industry, in universities and in business schools.
