Programme Research

GRI works with programme research. The idea behind GRI is to connect doctoral students and researchers to a research programme. By consolidating all our research into different programmes, all of our staff can work together on studies and exchange experiences with one another. That generates high-quality research.

At GRI we focus on a few carefully chosen areas of research. We want our research to make an impact on society and the business community, and we want it to be presented in a way that is easy to understand for people who are not researchers. Our research is used, for example, in undergraduate programmes in business administration and our staff often contributes to new textbooks. GRI’s researchers are also widely published in international scientific journals. Today there are seven research programmes:

GRI is a fundamentally interdisciplinary research institute that brings together researchers from the fields of business administration, ethnology, sociology, law, psychology, education, Swedish language, technology, and environmental science. GRI also maintains a close collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology and the School of Public Administration at the University of Gothenburg. All of the research programmes at GRI also benefit from a comprehensive international network and exchange that includes visiting research fellows from around the world.

Research themes


Twenty years ago we began a pioneering research initiative in green management. Since that time, the field of sustainability has grown to encompass economic and ethical aspects in addition to its original environmental focus. Today, therefore, we study sustainability from a variety of perspectives, including:

• Waste management in cities
• Social welfare reform
• Sustainable food consumption


Scandinavian Management has a long tradition at GRI and is characterised by a focus on processes and close collaboration between leadership and co-workers. Today we are also studying the relationships between management and technology and between management and innovation. Our current projects include:

  • Bank management risk management in banking
  • E-commerce and e-governance
  • Employeeship, creativity and innovation


In the area of diversity we primarily study issues of gender, ethnicity and age. Our point of departure is that diversity emerges from complex processes with a large number of interacting agents – public and private organisations, educational co-ordinators, consultants, individuals and technologies, to name just a few. Some examples of our current studies:

  • All Aboard – a design project for women
  • The perception of discrimination in the armed forces
  • Validation of immigrants’ professional expertise


Since 2001 we have been conducting inter-disciplinary research into consumer conditions and behaviour at the Centre for Consumer Research (CCR) at GRI. CCR strives to conduct consumer research that bridges over not only the boundaries between disciplines but also the boundaries between production and consumption, market and consumer, and culture and economy. Our on-going projects include:

  • How digital technologies like smartphones influence consumers
  • Consumer logistics, or how consumers transport their purchases
  • Consumer views on food safety alerts and risk
